Pushing Limits Can Cause Fuel Pump Damage

, , , , , , , , , , ,
Pushing The Limits

When it comes to performance vehicles like BMW and Mercedes, drivers like pushing limits – racing RPM, red-lining, and testing suspension and speeds. But there are some limits set for your car you shouldn’t test. If you’re the kind of driver that pushes the limit on all of your vehicle’s systems, like your fuel pump, you may be in for trouble.

fuel pump replacement des moines iowaAlthough it’s exhilarating to drive with the fuel gauge flirting with “E” with ten miles to go as your spouse stresses out in the passenger seat, it takes a toll on your car’s fuel system. Save yourself from future problems and visits to the shop by knowing when to draw the line on your gas tank.

Vehicles have fuel level warning lights to give you a warning before your car runs out of gas. It’s simply a buffer to remind you of how far you have until you have no other option but to fill up or walk home.

The gas light also serves as a red flag. It’s telling you you’ve crossed the line. According to most driver manuals, 1/2 tank should be considered low and 1/4 full is the time to top it off again. Not only will it prevent you from experiencing that small panic of not making it to the next stop, but your car’s fuel system will also see better life.

By letting your gas tank go lower than suggested, you are more likely to burn out your fuel pump. It’s an expensive price to pay and an inconvenience when you take it into the shop.

The mechanical parts of a fuel pump are lubricated by fuel which travel through the pump. When the fuel level is low, air is drawn into the pump. Similar to running an engine without oil, too much air can damage the fuel pump if it isn’t properly lubricated.

Debris is likely to sit at the bottom of a fuel tank but when the fuel level is low, the debris has a better chance of entering the pump and plugging the fuel filters which, in turn, damages the pump.

The flashing and dinging of the gas light should be your ultimate last warning, however it’s better to take precautions and fill up sooner rather than later. Pull over when you can and make it a priority to save you time and money by filling up.

For more information on how you can get the performance you want from your car while protecting your finely tuned systems, give us a call at 515-243-8185, schedule an appointment online HERE, or stop by our convenient downtown shop at 901-8th Street in Des Moines.

Flat Tire Challenge

Flat Tire

flat tire challengeNo one wants to get a flat tire. But it’s bound to happen at some point if you drive a car. If you walk into any tire store, you’re likely to see a jar full of nails, bolts, pieces of metal, and other objects that punctured someone’s tire and caused a slow hard-to-find leak or a full-on blowout. If something like that happens to you, your first order of business is to pull the car over to the side of the road to a safe location. After that, your best bet for quickly getting back on the road is to change your tire.

You’re probably not going to break any tire-changing records unless you’re already a pit crew professional. But if you’re prepared, you’ll be back on the road in no time. So before you you have to deal with a flat tire, Take the Flat Tire Challenge to ready yourself for the day you hear that unmistakable hissing noise or the thump-thump-thump of a punctured tire. Here’s all you need to do:

1. Take a minute to locate the spare tire in your car. In many cars, it’s a small tire affectionately known as the “donut.” It might be under a layering of flooring in the trunk of your car or bolted to the bottom of your car on the outside. Some trucks and SUVs provide easier access to the spare tire with it mounted on the back.

2. Locate the jack and tire iron. Most cars have some kind of brackets, casing, fabric bag, or both to keep these items together. And they’re usually located near or under the spare tire. Remove these tools and retrieve the spare tire.

3. Practice changing your tire. There’s no better way to prepare for changing a flat tire than learning how to do it before it happens.

  • Make sure your car is in a flat location away from traffic and set the parking brake.
  • Use the tire iron to loosen the lug nuts on the flat tire on your car.
  • Place the jack under the frame of your car, and jack it up until the tire clears the ground.
  • Remove the lug nuts and the tire.
  • Put your spare tire on and replace the lug nuts with your fingers.
  • Use the jack to lower the car back to the ground, and then tighten the lug nuts with the tire iron.

Doing this ahead of time forces you to get familiar with where your spare tire is located, along with using the tools needed to change a flat. You might find out that the tools you need are missing, your spare is flat, or worse – you don’t even have a spare. But it’s better to find that out during a planned exercise than when you’re stranded on the side of the road. Take the Flat Tire Challenge, and you’ll be well-prepared to deal with a flat when it happens. You can even use a timer to see how long it takes.

Did you pass the Flat Tire Challenge? If you’re looking for new tires, need routine maintenance or any kind of auto repair, call Beckley Imports at 515-243-8185 or simply schedule an appointment online HERE. Our trusted, expert technicians will have you back on the road in no time!

Trust Your Mercedes Benz Maintenance to the Experts at Beckley Automotive

, , , , , , , , , , ,

mercedes benz maintenanceMercedes Benz is designed not only for comfort and luxury but for style and performance. So, if your Mercedes isn’t functioning as it should, you need to have it looked at by an expert right away. No two models are the same, but when it comes to working with high-end luxury imports, you need an auto mechanic with the knowledge and experience to work on such a precision vehicle. Beckley Automotive specializes in all models, including German imports, so if you’re having trouble with your Benz, stop by the shop today to see if one of these common issues could be causing the trouble.

Electrical Issues

Some of the most common problems with modern vehicles, including the Mercedes Benz, lies in the electrical system. So much in a Mercedes Benz is regulated by the computer that if even a small hiccup occurs, entire systems may start to falter. The correction to this might be anything from a firmware update to replacing a small regulator within the vehicle. The good part about relying so much on computer systems is diagnosing problems and locating issues is much easier.

Avoid Non Import Shops

One problem you may experience has nothing to do with your vehicle but more to do with where you take it. While most vehicles run in a very similar way, maintenance of a Mercedes is different enough from a domestic vehicle it can cause some confusion with an inexperienced mechanic. From a change in how the oil is changed to locating the coolant drain valve, nearly everything is slightly different. So only trust an experienced team of auto mechanics with demonstrated certifications on working with Mercedes vehicles.

Engine Mounts

Have you ever noticed just how much smoother a ride in a Mercedes is over other vehicles? One reason is because the engine mounts are oil filled, which helps absorb vibrations given off by the engine. Over time, these mounts can lose oil or begin to fail. This translates to an unusual amount of vibration and feedback in the cabin of your Mercedes. If your ride isn’t as smooth as a Mercedes is built to be, let the team at Beckley’s take a look.

When it comes to Mercedes Benz maintenance, your vehicle should only be serviced by trained mechanics with Mercedes Benz expertise. At Beckley Automotive, you’ll find a team of mechanics who have the necessary training, certifications and experience to work on and restore your vehicle.

Whether you’re having an electrical issue, are suffering engine problems or there’s another issue all together, contact Beckley Automotive at 515-243-8185, stop by the shop at 901 8th Street in downtown Des Moines, or schedule your Mercedes Benz maintenance online HERE today.

Are You Getting Great Fuel Economy?

, , , , , , , , ,

great fuel economyDo you do a lot of highway driving? Are you more of a city stoplight driver? No matter if you’re road-tripping for your summer vacation, traveling for work, or just hopping on the interstate to get across town, your engine performs best and achieves peak fuel economy during ideal highway driving conditions. In Iowa, that means traveling at 65 miles an hour or better. Cross state lines and the speed limit goes up. That can be good for getting to your destination faster, and it can give you great fuel economy, but only if your car’s engine and supporting systems are working properly.

That’s where Beckley Imports comes in. Through proper maintenance of your car’s engine, you can get the best fuel economy, drive safe and secure, and save a little money in the long run. Proper engine maintenance is simply a matter of discipline.  Some of the issues you need to pay attention to for great fuel economy include:

  • Intake and exhaust restrictions:

Make sure your air filters are clean and clear. If your car can’t breathe, it will work harder and use more fuel to get going.

  • Timing and shifting:

Slipping of the clutch in a manual transmission or the torque converter lockup in an automatic can make you lose power before it even gets to the wheels.

  • Mechanical resistance:

We’ll tell you time and time again to make sure your oil is clean. The more impurities and particles in your engine’s oil, the more friction in your engine and the harder it has to work.

  • Tire performance:

Improper inflation of your tires causes all kinds of trouble, including lower fuel economy and more wear on your wheels.

These can have a substantial effect on fuel economy and how well your car runs. Even driving conditions like outside temperature and wind resistance can have an impact.

Get the most out of every dollar you spend at the pump. Beckley Automotive’s team of expert technicians can give your car a thorough inspection and recommend needed services to help your vehicle achieve optimal fuel economy for driving around town or hauling the family to Wally World. In many cases, a simple tune-up can make a big difference!

Don’t forget that Mother’s Day is this weekend! Bring Mom’s car in for an inspection and tune-up and help her get the most out of her gas money. We can also get Dad’s or your graduate’s engine ready for summer travel and adventure. Give us a call at 515-423-8185 or click HERE to schedule an appointment online.

5 Tips For Buying a Used Car for Your Graduate

, , , , , , ,

buying a used car, pre-purchase inspectionBuying a used car is an excellent way to save money on a newer set of wheels, especially for a college student or a recent graduate staring down student loans. Vehicles depreciate in value faster than just about any other major purchase, so buying used can really slash the price. But buying used brings about a different set of risks. Is the seller being truthful about the car’s history? Will the engine fail as soon as you drive away? How can you be sure you’re buying a reliable vehicle for your son or daughter? If you are thinking of buying a used car for your new high school or college graduate, bring it to Beckley Automotive first for a Pre-Purchase Inspection. You can also save yourself some time and hassle by knowing what to look for in a used vehicle.

Here are 5 tips to keep in mind when buying a used car:

  1. Get the CarFax

You’ve seen the commercials. A CarFax report is one of the most helpful documents you’ll obtain regarding a vehicle. The report details every kind of service performed over the life of the car. Whether it has been in an accident, had a new engine put in or the previous owner just put on new shocks, it is all listed here. Request a CarFax report whenever buying used.

  2. Beware of Leaking Fluids

Any kind of leaking fluid is a sign to stay away. Naturally it’s not going to leak sitting in a lot or garage. Take the vehicle for a test drive, then let it idol for 30 seconds or a minute. From there get out, look under the vehicle and pop the hood. If you see any leaking you need to pass. A pre-purchase inspection can also identify possible leaks.

  3. Bring Your Kelley Blue Book

Look up the vehicle on Kelley Blue Book. Make sure you have the exact trim model and mileage and any extra, third party features noted. Kelley Blue Book will then detail if the price is fair or not.

  4. Check the Windshield

This is easy to miss, but look over the windshield carefully. It’s easy to miss little nicks and scratches when looking at everything else on the vehicle. However, even a small nick can end up costing you hundreds in glass repair later down the line.

  5. Get a Pre-Purchase Inspection

If you’re buying the vehicle from an independent seller this is a must. Even with the CarFax, a professional inspection gives you a complete overview of the vehicle. Our trained technicians will point out any potential and upcoming problems.

Shopping for a used vehicle can be daunting. You don’t want to waste time and money on a possible lemon when you need a reliable car to get your student to and from college safely. Take some of the stress out of the process by getting a pre-purchase inspection from the experts at Beckley Automotive.

Whether you’re buying a Landrover to handle the Des Moines winters or a slightly used BMW convertible for the Iowa summers, Beckley’s can service everything. Give us a call at 515-243-8185, stop by our shop at 901 8th Street in Downtown Des Moines, or set up an appointment ONLINE today!

Why Factory Scheduled Maintenance is Important

, , , , , , , , , , , ,

factory scheduled maintenanceWhen you purchase a vehicle, it will include a list of recommended mile markers for factory scheduled maintenance. The exact schedule varies slightly based on the make and model, but typically it starts around the 25,000 mark and continues on every 10,000-15,000 miles. Looking at the extended list of factory scheduled maintenance, you may not think it’s all necessary. After all, why should a perfectly functioning vehicle need to go in for maintenance every 10,000 miles? While it may take time out of your day, it is extremely important to follow through with the recommended maintenance. Beckley Automotive is here to show you why.

Replace Damaged Components

The main components of your vehicle are designed to work for a very long time. You likely will not need work done on your transmission or engine every 10,000 miles. However, other parts, such as belts, break down. Replacing these components is quick and easy, yet it safeguards your vehicle from more expensive repairs. Failure to replace a belt at the suggested time may result in it breaking while you’re driving, which in turn can cause other areas of the vehicle to sustain damage.

Identify Larger Issues Ahead of Time

Transmissions do not just suddenly give out and engines do not die out of nowhere. There are always signs pointing to the potential failure of these major parts of your vehicle. During basic car maintenance such as an oil change or coolant flush you might not receive an in-depth inspection of the vehicle, which means these warning signs may be missed. With the complete inspection thanks to the recommended factory scheduled maintenance, problem areas can be identified earlier and corrected quickly. Catching a problem early may end up saving you hundreds, if not thousands of dollars in repair fees. Being proactive with vehicle maintenance is far more beneficial than waiting for something to happen.

Beckley Automotive is fully certified to work on any make and model vehicle. It doesn’t matter if you drive a Ford F-150 or a Mercedes C class, our mechanics can perform the recommended maintenance without voiding the warranty. So skip out on the long lines common with going to the dealership and come see us at Beckley Automotive.

Whether you have a question regarding your vehicle, have hit the factory scheduled maintenance mile mark or you have another issue all together with your car, contact us today by calling 515-243-8185. Or you can schedule an appointment online HERE and select the time that works best for you.

Check These Signs Your Car is Out of Alignment

, , , , , ,

out of alignment, wheel alignment serviceWhat you do in your vehicle, how you drive it and how you take care of it all plays a role in the long term performance of the car, truck or SUV. Proper tune ups and maintenance can correct slight issues every vehicle experiences. One such issue you’ll run into eventually includes an alignment. A car alignment doesn’t start off as a major problem. You may just notice a slight difference in how it handles. However, if not corrected early on, it can develop additional problems, costing you more money in repair services. That is why Beckley Auto wants you to know how to tell when your car is out of alignment.

Vehicle Pulling

Have you noticed your vehicle is pulling in one direction or the other? It likely means your vehicle is out of alignment. While this might mean you need to rotate your tires, you realistically should not have a substantial pull to one side because of tires. Not sure if your vehicle is pulling to one side? Look at how your steering wheel is positioned when driving straight. Is it tilted either to the right or left? If so, your may be out of alignment. Also, if you let go of the wheel, does it drift in a particular direction? Again, it probably means you need a car alignment service.

Tires are Not Wearing Evenly

On average, you turn your vehicle to the right slightly more than to the left. This is one reason to rotate your tires in order to ensure even wear. However, if one side of your vehicle is wearing significantly faster than the other side, it means more weight is being diverted to that side of the vehicle. Correcting the alignment will make your vehicle safer and extend tire life.

Squealing Tires

When you turn do you hear the tires squeal? You’re most likely not a speed demon, street racing in your gorgeous European import vehicle. If the tires squeal when performing a natural, standard turn that isn’t under duress, you may need an alignment.

From routine maintenance to larger repair needs, Beckley Auto is here for you and your vehicle. It doesn’t matter if you drive a Mercedes or a Buick, a Porsche or Mini Cooper, our repair technicians have the necessary knowledge and experience to service your vehicle.

If you believe your vehicle is out of alignment, needs an oil change or any kind of work done on your vehicle, schedule your appointment online today! In no time, your vehicle will respond just as it did when you first drove it off the lot.

Does Your Porsche or Landrover Need a Coolant Flush?

, ,

Porsche, landrover, coolant flush, european vehiclesWhile Porsche and Landrover are from different manufacturers, both are high-end European performance vehicles. From top of the line sports coupes to state of the art SUVs, you enter into a brand new world of luxury when you sit behind the wheel of such a vehicle. To maximize your level of enjoyment, you need to care for it properly. This includes knowing the warning signs of a faulty coolant system. Thankfully, most coolant system issues can be corrected with a coolant flush. This removes old coolant from your system, as well as air pockets and built up gunk within the radiator. Performing a coolant flush can breathe new life into your European import’s cooling system. That’s why it’s important to know the signs your Porsche or Landrover needs a coolant flush.

  • Engine Runs Hot

Your Porsche or Landrover should hover right around the midway mark in terms of engine temperature. It does take a few minutes to reach running temperature, but from there it should stay stable throughout the duration of your drive. A slight fluctuation may occur when idling or accelerating, but if it starts to creep up and past the 3/4 mark, it means there is a potential problem. Now, if you notice the temp increases while idling but drops back down as the vehicle is moving, it likely means there is an air pocket in the cooling system. The lack of pressure pushing the coolant through while idling is causing the temperature changes. A coolant flush will often correct this problem.

  • Last Flush

Every engine requires a complete change out of the coolant at set intervals. This ensures clean and more efficient coolant runs through the system. Check your owner’s manual for the exact mileage recommendations. Staying on top of this is as important as regularly changing your oil.

  • Smells Sweet

Have you noticed a sweet smell after driving? This is the coolant. It’s likely to be more noticeable when running the AC. Turn the AC off the next time you drive to test. Still smell sweet? Time for a coolant flush.

At Beckley Auto, we are here to provide you with outstanding European import services for Porsche, Landrover and many others. We also service Asian imports like Honda and Hyundai and domestic vehicles, including Chevys and Rams.

If you believe your vehicle is in need of a coolant flush, tune up, oil change or something more substantial, feel free to schedule a service appointment online HERE at your convenience or call our knowledgeable service staff at 515.243.8185.

Don’t Leave Your Car Battery Out in the Cold

car battery, winter driving bmw des moines iowa

car battery, winter driving bmw des moines iowaIowa winters are definitely known for being frigid and snowy and this week is certainly reminding us of this fact.  While you’re stocking up on ice salt and making sure the old snow blower still starts up, we at Beckley Imports want to make sure you check out one other thing: your car battery and starter system.

With all the new features offered in cars today, like seat heaters and high end sound systems, battery drain happens more quickly than it used to.  Add on a couple of bitter Iowa winters, and your battery is tired.  The last thing you want on a cold January night after a long day of work is to walk out to your car only to find that it won’t start.

At Beckley Imports, we stock AC Delco and Interstate batteries that have the long life and power you need to start your engine every time.  Not only that, but these two battery brands are guaranteed to fit properly.  This is highly important, as many batteries are now set in the trunk or under the backseat; poorly fitted batteries can  lead to more costly problems like leaks and short circuits.  Beckley Imports is also an Authorized Bosch Service Center, meaning that we use only genuine Bosch starters and alternators on European vehicles; these parts come with a two year warranty, so if something goes wrong, you don’t have to worry.

If you’re concerned about your car’s battery making it through the winter months, bring it on by.  We’d be happy to test it out for you.  Beckley Imports has top of the line equipment to test the battery and other factors within the vehicle that could cause it to fail.

Don’t get left out in the cold this winter.  Call Beckley Imports at (515) 243-8185 or schedule your appointment online HERE today.
