Check These Signs Your Car is Out of Alignment

, , , , , ,

out of alignment, wheel alignment serviceWhat you do in your vehicle, how you drive it and how you take care of it all plays a role in the long term performance of the car, truck or SUV. Proper tune ups and maintenance can correct slight issues every vehicle experiences. One such issue you’ll run into eventually includes an alignment. A car alignment doesn’t start off as a major problem. You may just notice a slight difference in how it handles. However, if not corrected early on, it can develop additional problems, costing you more money in repair services. That is why Beckley Auto wants you to know how to tell when your car is out of alignment.

Vehicle Pulling

Have you noticed your vehicle is pulling in one direction or the other? It likely means your vehicle is out of alignment. While this might mean you need to rotate your tires, you realistically should not have a substantial pull to one side because of tires. Not sure if your vehicle is pulling to one side? Look at how your steering wheel is positioned when driving straight. Is it tilted either to the right or left? If so, your may be out of alignment. Also, if you let go of the wheel, does it drift in a particular direction? Again, it probably means you need a car alignment service.

Tires are Not Wearing Evenly

On average, you turn your vehicle to the right slightly more than to the left. This is one reason to rotate your tires in order to ensure even wear. However, if one side of your vehicle is wearing significantly faster than the other side, it means more weight is being diverted to that side of the vehicle. Correcting the alignment will make your vehicle safer and extend tire life.

Squealing Tires

When you turn do you hear the tires squeal? You’re most likely not a speed demon, street racing in your gorgeous European import vehicle. If the tires squeal when performing a natural, standard turn that isn’t under duress, you may need an alignment.

From routine maintenance to larger repair needs, Beckley Auto is here for you and your vehicle. It doesn’t matter if you drive a Mercedes or a Buick, a Porsche or Mini Cooper, our repair technicians have the necessary knowledge and experience to service your vehicle.

If you believe your vehicle is out of alignment, needs an oil change or any kind of work done on your vehicle, schedule your appointment online today! In no time, your vehicle will respond just as it did when you first drove it off the lot.

Does Your Porsche or Landrover Need a Coolant Flush?

, ,

Porsche, landrover, coolant flush, european vehiclesWhile Porsche and Landrover are from different manufacturers, both are high-end European performance vehicles. From top of the line sports coupes to state of the art SUVs, you enter into a brand new world of luxury when you sit behind the wheel of such a vehicle. To maximize your level of enjoyment, you need to care for it properly. This includes knowing the warning signs of a faulty coolant system. Thankfully, most coolant system issues can be corrected with a coolant flush. This removes old coolant from your system, as well as air pockets and built up gunk within the radiator. Performing a coolant flush can breathe new life into your European import’s cooling system. That’s why it’s important to know the signs your Porsche or Landrover needs a coolant flush.

  • Engine Runs Hot

Your Porsche or Landrover should hover right around the midway mark in terms of engine temperature. It does take a few minutes to reach running temperature, but from there it should stay stable throughout the duration of your drive. A slight fluctuation may occur when idling or accelerating, but if it starts to creep up and past the 3/4 mark, it means there is a potential problem. Now, if you notice the temp increases while idling but drops back down as the vehicle is moving, it likely means there is an air pocket in the cooling system. The lack of pressure pushing the coolant through while idling is causing the temperature changes. A coolant flush will often correct this problem.

  • Last Flush

Every engine requires a complete change out of the coolant at set intervals. This ensures clean and more efficient coolant runs through the system. Check your owner’s manual for the exact mileage recommendations. Staying on top of this is as important as regularly changing your oil.

  • Smells Sweet

Have you noticed a sweet smell after driving? This is the coolant. It’s likely to be more noticeable when running the AC. Turn the AC off the next time you drive to test. Still smell sweet? Time for a coolant flush.

At Beckley Auto, we are here to provide you with outstanding European import services for Porsche, Landrover and many others. We also service Asian imports like Honda and Hyundai and domestic vehicles, including Chevys and Rams.

If you believe your vehicle is in need of a coolant flush, tune up, oil change or something more substantial, feel free to schedule a service appointment online HERE at your convenience or call our knowledgeable service staff at 515.243.8185.

Common Muffler Problem on Early 2000 Toyota

, , , ,

early 2000 toyota, toyota muffler problemToyota is one of the most respected auto companies on the planet. Between Toyota and Lexus, the vehicles are built to last. If you own one, chances are it is not your first, and more than likely it is not your last. While it may seem like the vehicle doesn’t run into as many problems as the competition, even the best designed vehicles have flaws. Have you noticed your early 2000 Toyota vehicle sounds loud, as if there is a problem with the muffler, but the muffler is still there, completely in tact? While not something that all models run into, this is something that occurs from time to time on Toyotas. At Beckley Auto, we can help correct the problem and return the vehicle back to its quiet, well running self.

The Problem

The issue at hand may be different for your particular vehicle, so it’s important to have your vehicle inspected to determine the problem. However, if there is a loud sound, as if there is no muffler on your vehicle, it usually is because an element in the car’s exhaust system is no longer there. If you follow the muffler, you’ll see where it connects to the exhaust  pipe. However, this is not just a straight pipe. There are a few connectors involved (without getting into overly technical terms).

On several Toyota models, two different kinds of metal are used in these connectors. While it makes for a secure, tight fit, when two different metals come in contact with one another, the metals are more likely to rust, which is why many plumbers will not connect different kinds of metal piping together. The crazy Iowa weather can certainly influence rusting, and this damages this particular connector part of the exhaust line, and it will eventually fall off.

What sets us apart from our competitors is our attention to detail and our determination to offer our clients the very best service and products. An example of this can be seen in the substandard oil changes many automotive companies offer to their clients. At Beckley Automotive, your BMW will receive the undivided attention of a master technician who will use quality oils that are suited to your car. These are the perks that come with having an authorized BMW service provider within reach. There isn’t another place in the Waukee, Johnston, Ankeny or Clive areas where you can find this level of automotive care.

  • Our inspection services

The weather in Des Moines can fluctuate tremendously at different times during the year. This can range from extreme cold to snow accumulation and on to occasional flooding. Given your car will often be subjected to such conditions, it is important that you schedule regular inspections. Since there are few authorized BMW service providers in the area with the expertise we have, coming to Beckley’s will be well worth your time. We will focus our attention on assessing the spark plugs, air filters, brake and transmission fluid, and coolant. While checking all these components at the same time might seem unnecessary, it can save you plenty of hassle in the future.

  • Updating your computer software

The software found in BMW vehicles, as with all high-quality cars, performs a variety of important functions in the car. This might include simple tasks like operating the radio and climate control to more important tasks like engine performance and braking. Our authorized BMW service package also includes software updates to keep your auto performance as efficient and comfortable as possible. We also provide consultation on the best updates available to meet your specific needs.

Don’t Leave Your Car Battery Out in the Cold

, ,
car battery, winter driving bmw des moines iowa

car battery, winter driving bmw des moines iowaIowa winters are definitely known for being frigid and snowy and this week is certainly reminding us of this fact.  While you’re stocking up on ice salt and making sure the old snow blower still starts up, we at Beckley Imports want to make sure you check out one other thing: your car battery and starter system.

With all the new features offered in cars today, like seat heaters and high end sound systems, battery drain happens more quickly than it used to.  Add on a couple of bitter Iowa winters, and your battery is tired.  The last thing you want on a cold January night after a long day of work is to walk out to your car only to find that it won’t start.

At Beckley Imports, we stock AC Delco and Interstate batteries that have the long life and power you need to start your engine every time.  Not only that, but these two battery brands are guaranteed to fit properly.  This is highly important, as many batteries are now set in the trunk or under the backseat; poorly fitted batteries can  lead to more costly problems like leaks and short circuits.  Beckley Imports is also an Authorized Bosch Service Center, meaning that we use only genuine Bosch starters and alternators on European vehicles; these parts come with a two year warranty, so if something goes wrong, you don’t have to worry.

If you’re concerned about your car’s battery making it through the winter months, bring it on by.  We’d be happy to test it out for you.  Beckley Imports has top of the line equipment to test the battery and other factors within the vehicle that could cause it to fail.

Don’t get left out in the cold this winter.  Call Beckley Imports at (515) 243-8185 or schedule your appointment online HERE today.

Protect Your Warranty With Beckley Automotive

, ,

scheduled maintenance, protect your warranty, car warranty, auto warrantyOne of the great things about buying a new car is the warranty. Knowing that the manufacturer will stand behind the quality of the products they make helps take some of the stress out of the purchase. But there is some confusion about how, exactly, to use the warranty and what will truly negate it. How can you protect your warranty?

If the dealership tries to tell you that you have to bring the vehicle to them for maintenance and repairs, they may be committing a crime. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act established in 1975 makes it illegal for dealers or manufacturers to say that the warranty will be voided or denied if anyone but the dealer does the work. You can take your vehicle to any independent mechanic, retail chain shop or do the work yourself without negating the warranty. Of course, the manufacturer or dealer can require the use of specific facilities if the services are to be done without a charge to the consumer under the warranty.

How can you avoid problems with the warranty? According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation’s consumer protection agency, there are a few steps you can follow to avoid issues:

  • Read Your Warranty: It’s important to know what it covered and what isn’t before repairs are needed. The warranty is usually in with the owner’s manual and will provide specific details of the warranty so there aren’t any surprises down the road. Most manufacturer websites will have an owner’s manual available online if you happen to misplace the one that came with your car.
  • Know Your Warranty Period: Warranties DO have an expiration – either a number of years or a number of miles. It’s important to know the time limits of your warranty so you can be certain to get problems corrected in plenty of time.
  • Service Regularly: While regular service is a good idea in any case, it’s essential to follow the manufacturer’s recommended service schedule to be certain you are following the parameters of the warranty.
  • Keep All Service Records and Receipts: Whether it’s an oil change, new brake pads, tire rotations or a major repair, create a file to track all repairs and maintenance. If you have to take advantage of your warranty, it will be in your favor to be able to prove that you took care of the vehicle.
  • Fight For Your Warranty: In some cases, a warranty claim may be denied unfairly. If you feel this is the case, ask to speak with a supervisor or go to the manufacturer or another dealer. You can also file a complaint with your state Attorney General or the FTC if service is denied arbitrarily.

Beckley Automotive has been servicing domestic and European vehicles for over 30 years. Our technicians are ASE and Bosch certified and are well-trained in all the latest diagnostic and service tools. You can rest assured that our team will protect your warranty and your investment with integrity.

It’s Not Too Early to Get Your Car Ready for Winter Driving

, , , , , , , ,

It’s hard to imagine prepping your car for fall and winter driving with the 80+ degree temps we’re currently enjoying.  But reality is that fall is practically here and that means football, turkey, presents and HARSH WINTER DRIVING are just around the corner.

TIP:  When you see the garden centers closing up and the patio furniture on clearance at the stores – it’s time to winterize.

winter driving bmw des moines iowaWinter puts an amazing strain on your car’s systems and fluids.  And if you leave your car outdoors overnight, it endures even more punishment.  Here’s what you should do now to avoid shivering on the roadside waiting for a tow.

Get caught up on recommended maintenance

If the summer was just too busy, it’s a good idea to get caught up on the simple things.  We’re sure that with other shops you’ve visited, you might have felt “taken” a bit with add-ons and extras that didn’t seem necessary.  We guarantee that our technicians will recommend only what’s necessary for your vehicle and give you clear guidance on additional maintenance items that you should consider.

TIP:  Sometimes you just feel like asking, “Is it OK if I wait on servicing say…my water pump…until the next time I visit?”  Don’t feel awkward about it! At Beckley, you’ll get an honest answer that does not contain a hidden agenda or innuendo.  We’ve built our business on honesty and good value…so ask any question you’d like and we’ll give you a straightforward answer.

Kick the tires

Possibly the most essential element in the winter equation is tires.  If you don’t do a summer/winter tire switch, make sure you have tread – and lots of it.  Sometimes when you’re at that “in between” stage where there’s probably just enough tread to get by until Spring, this is a tough decision.  Safety should be your first consideration here.  Stopping distances go through the roof on snow and ice and tread is your friend.

Get the cooling system ready to be REALLY cool

It might seem like “cooling” systems are less relevant in the winter.  It’s true you’re less likely to have overheating issues from a 10-minute drive when it’s 20 degrees outside.  But a properly operating cooling system is essential to your engine’s life at ALL temperatures.  Freezing temps can really push an old water pump to the limit, so if you’re approaching or are over the max life for that part – consider a proactive replacement.

Put the scraper and winter emergency kit back in the vehicle

It’s a great idea to keep a plastic bin containing simple roadside survival items in your trunk.  Be sure to check your items each year for expiration dates and put in fresh batteries. Some things to include are:

  • spare gloves/hats
  • jackets
  • flashlights
  • first aid kit
  • blankets
  • small shovel
  • food
  • knife
  • chains
  • jumper cables

TIP:  Consider putting one or more 40 pound sandbags in the rear of your car.  This will help with traction in a rear wheel drive car of course.  But a side benefit is that if you get stuck, you can grab the knife from your winter safety kit, cut open the bag, and lay the sand down under and around your tires for extra traction.  You’d be surprised how much this helps when things get slick and you’re spinning those gorgeous wheels.

Now is the perfect time to schedule an appointment online to get your car ready for the harsh Iowa winter. Our convenient shuttle can get you to work or home and our service advisers can help you with further transportation arrangements. Call Beckley Automotive today!

What is an ASE Certified Technician?

, , ,

ASE certified techniciansHave you noticed Beckley Automotive’s “ASE Certified” signs or stickers displayed in the shop or on the website? You’ve probably wondered what that’s all about and what it means for you and your vehicle.

ASE – the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence –  offers consumers a way to find a reliable, knowledgeable auto technician. It’s hard to feel confident trusting your car to a new mechanic. How do you know he’ll be able to diagnose your car correctly AND have the ability to fix the problem once it’s found? ASE takes the guesswork out of the equation by vetting vehicle technicians all over the United States so you don’t have to.

How does it work?

  • Every year, roughly 100,000 technicians take the difficult national ASE tests. To become ASE Certified, each technician must have two years’ of work experience as well as a passing score on at least one ASE exam. A technician can attain Master Technician status by completing a tough series of further specialized exams on top of meeting the experience requirement.
  • ASE tests are developed by industry experts and then administered by ACT, the college entrance exam group, so you know the tests are comprehensive and challenging.
  • There are eight tests available for auto technicians that cover all car systems: Manual Drive Train and Axles, Suspension and Steering, Automatic Transmissions, Heating and Air Conditioning, Engine Performance, Brakes, Engine Repair and Electrical/Electronic Systems. ASE also offers comprehensive exams for parts specialists, collision repair technicians, engine machinists and more.
  • ASE credentials do expire, and technicians have to pass exams for re-certification every five years to ensure they are up-to-date on the newest technology.

Your car is an essential component of your everyday life. You rely on it to get you to and from work, to play, to transport your children to practices and school and family functions. Is that something you want to take a chance on? Doctors have to pass rigorous tests to be able to practice medicine, letting you know that they can be trusted to have the knowledge and skills to take care of you and your family. Why would you take any less precaution when entrusting your vehicle’s care to a technician? You can rest easy knowing your car will be in the hands of Beckley’s certified, knowledgeable and skilled technicians.

Beckley Automotive is proud to participate in the ASE Certification Program and to provide peace of mind to our customers. Schedule your auto maintenance or repair appointment ONLINE today!

5 Fun Facts For BMW Owners

, ,
bmw owners, BMW information des moines iowa

While Des Moines BMW owners have unmatched passion for their European autos, being the “Go-To” service location for European cars requires Beckley Automotive to dig deep into the history and heritage of the cars we service. This allows us to give the best maintenance and support to your European car as possible. Along the way, we pick up odd – and somewhat amusing – tidbits of European car information.

Check out these 5 “Did you knows” about our beloved BMW:

  1. passionate bmw ownersThe BMW Name – BMW stands for Bayerische Motoren Werke. In English, that would be: Bavarian Motor Works
  2. The BMW Logo – The Roundel logo stems from the days of its aircraft heritage, and symbolizes a spinning propeller.
A huge component of the BMW logo is the blue and white fields, and those come off the Bavarian flag. (Bavaria is a state in Germany.)
  3. The BMW “LOOK” – The kidney grille BMW owners have come to love was first used in the BMW 303. The 303 was a mid-sized saloon (meaning it had a closed body and a closed trunk separate from where the driver and passengers sit) produced in the early 1930’s. It was the first BMW to use the “kidney grille” which today is a hallmark of their model.
  4. The BMW Letter – BMW does not use automobile platforms like any other manufactures. Instead, each generation has a development code – an Entwicklungsnummeren. The “E” stands for “Entwicklung” which means “Development.” BMW progressed through the E series into triple digits and then switched to using “F”. At this time, we can’t find that “F” stands for anything – it was just the logical next step!
  5. The FIRST BMW – The first car made by BMW is: The BMW Dixi!
BMW bought the Automobilwerk Eisenach in 1928 and, with it, the rights to build the Dixi car… Soon after that, they dropped the Dixi name.

European cars run in our blood (almost literally). From BMW to Mercedes, Jaguar, Porsche and more, we love what we do as much as you love the driving performance of the cars we service.

Feel free to contact Beckley Automotive with any questions you have about your car’s performance. You can schedule a service appointment online HERE, give us a call at 515-243-8185, or visit us at our convenient downtown location at 901 8th Street!

Keep Your Car Cool in Iowa’s Extreme Heat

, , , , , ,

overheated car, summer heat, extreme heat wave, Beckley AutomotiveThe recent heat wave here in Des Moines basically has us melting and remembering with fondness winter snow storms. While we rely on the air conditioning in our homes, offices and cars to save the day, we don’t usually think about other critical auto maintenance necessary in Iowa summer’s extreme heat.

  1. Stay on top of tire pressure. Weather plays a big role in your tire pressure: cold weather can cause your tires to be under-inflated while hot weather can cause them to be OVER inflated. When your tire pressure is off, it can lower your gas mileage and cause extra and uneven wear on the tread. Make sure you check your tire pressure during extreme heat and keep tires inflated to the number printed on the vehicle door placard or in the owner’s manual, not the number on the tire.
  2. Maintain your cooling system. Does it take forever for your auto air conditioner to actually get cold? If you haven’t flushed your cooling system in the last 5 years, that could be why. Engines these days have a lot of aluminum parts and require great corrosion protection to last longer. It’s also a good idea to park out of the sun whenever possible so your air conditioner doesn’t have to work so hard.
  3. Top off all fluids. Motor oil does so much more than keeping the moving parts moving – it also absorbs heat from all the friction. You’re aware that you need to keep coolant at the right levels, but there is a lot of evaporation going on under the hood that a lot of people forget about. You’ll burn through transmission fluid faster and battery fluids don’t always last through extended high temperatures, like we’ve seen recently.
  4. Plan for an emergency. Nobody wants to think they could get stranded out in the middle of nowhere during the summer, but planning ahead could save a life. Put together an emergency package with things like bottled water, a flashlight, a car charger for your cell phone, a first-aid kit, road flares, granola bars, instant cold packs that activate when needed, and anything else you think you might need in an emergency. It’s always better to have something and not need it than to need something and not have it.

This extreme heat will pass, but make sure you can get your car through it without any major breakdowns or problems. If you think ahead and stay prepared, you can save yourself a lot of trouble and a lot of money.

Need to make sure your car is ready for the current extreme heat and brutal summer months ahead? No matter the make or model, you can contact Beckley Imports today to schedule an appointment online, give us a call at 515-243-8185, or visit us downtown at 901 8th Street!
