Don’t Let Car Electrical Problems Ruin Your Summer

, , , , , , ,

car electrical problemsThe electrical systems in your vehicle are expected to function properly – after all, you take care of your vehicle and do what you can to keep it in top shape. But what happens when car electrical problems start to rear an ugly head? These issues often are not usually self-contained and may grow in scope, which is why you need to do what you can to correct the issue now rather than waiting around for it to turn into a larger problem. Here are some of the most common car electrical problems you are likely to run into. Should you experience any of these, it is a good idea to bring your vehicle into Beckley Auto.

Nothing Happens When you Turn the Ignition

When you slide the key into the ignition and only hear a click, it means the battery does not have enough power stored to turn on your vehicle. While a charge might get you going for the time being, it likely is time to change your battery.

Some Power But Car Still Won’t Start

Do the lights flicker on and other systems kick in but your vehicle’s engine still doesn’t start? It might mean your alternator is dead. This prevents your battery from recharging, which means you might have enough power to turn on lights but not to turn on the engine.

Random Systems are Not Working

Does it seem like there is a random combination of systems not working? Perhaps the stereo and dome light go out when you open your car door. When this happens it usually means you have a blown fuse. Check your vehicles fuses (use the owner’s manual for guidance) to see if you just need to swap out the bad fuse.

Trouble Accelerating

If you have trouble accelerating, you may have a problem with the spark plugs and the electrical system signaling the spark plug to fire. Spark plugs can be faulty or can just plain wear out over time. Or you could have an issue with the computer that tells the spark plugs to fire. Either way, when something like this happens you need to bring your vehicle to Beckley Imports for an accurate diagnosis.

Newer vehicles are more likely to run into electrical problems simply due to the amount of technology built into the vehicles. In most newer cars, each system now has its own computer which can save your other systems when something goes wrong, but also multiplies the chance of a computer error.

If you are suffering from car electrical problems in vehicle, it doesn’t matter if it’s an expensive import or a hand-me-down domestic vehicle – Beckley Imports has the knowledge, experience and equipment to get you back on the road. Contact Beckley Auto at 515-243-8185 or simply set up an appointment ONLINE for all of your auto service needs.

Does Your Porsche or Landrover Need a Coolant Flush?

, ,

Porsche, landrover, coolant flush, european vehiclesWhile Porsche and Landrover are from different manufacturers, both are high-end European performance vehicles. From top of the line sports coupes to state of the art SUVs, you enter into a brand new world of luxury when you sit behind the wheel of such a vehicle. To maximize your level of enjoyment, you need to care for it properly. This includes knowing the warning signs of a faulty coolant system. Thankfully, most coolant system issues can be corrected with a coolant flush. This removes old coolant from your system, as well as air pockets and built up gunk within the radiator. Performing a coolant flush can breathe new life into your European import’s cooling system. That’s why it’s important to know the signs your Porsche or Landrover needs a coolant flush.

  • Engine Runs Hot

Your Porsche or Landrover should hover right around the midway mark in terms of engine temperature. It does take a few minutes to reach running temperature, but from there it should stay stable throughout the duration of your drive. A slight fluctuation may occur when idling or accelerating, but if it starts to creep up and past the 3/4 mark, it means there is a potential problem. Now, if you notice the temp increases while idling but drops back down as the vehicle is moving, it likely means there is an air pocket in the cooling system. The lack of pressure pushing the coolant through while idling is causing the temperature changes. A coolant flush will often correct this problem.

  • Last Flush

Every engine requires a complete change out of the coolant at set intervals. This ensures clean and more efficient coolant runs through the system. Check your owner’s manual for the exact mileage recommendations. Staying on top of this is as important as regularly changing your oil.

  • Smells Sweet

Have you noticed a sweet smell after driving? This is the coolant. It’s likely to be more noticeable when running the AC. Turn the AC off the next time you drive to test. Still smell sweet? Time for a coolant flush.

At Beckley Auto, we are here to provide you with outstanding European import services for Porsche, Landrover and many others. We also service Asian imports like Honda and Hyundai and domestic vehicles, including Chevys and Rams.

If you believe your vehicle is in need of a coolant flush, tune up, oil change or something more substantial, feel free to schedule a service appointment online HERE at your convenience or call our knowledgeable service staff at 515.243.8185.

car fluid check, fluid leaks, engine leaksIt’s never a good thing to find a puddle on your garage floor or in the driveway. How long has it been there? Where is it leaking from? Are there multiple leaks? How long until the engine throws a rod or simply eats itself?

Bring your car in for regular fluid service at Beckley Automotive and head off leaks before they become a problem!

Beckley Automotive Meets Growing Need for Diesel Service

, , , , , ,

As people become more concerned about the environment and auto emissions, the call for diesel service shops grows. If you’re in the market for a diesel vehicle, you won’t be disappointed in your selection. Auto makers from Jeep to Chevrolet to BMW to Volkswagen offer great diesel options. You can choose from pickup trucks, crossovers, SUVs and luxury models.

Now that you know where to go for trustworthy diesel service, why should you look at purchasing a diesel vehicle?

  1. diesel service, diesel engine maintenanceMileage. Diesel engines are well-known for being cost effective. Diesel fuel generates more power from less fuel, so you can easily get more bang for your buck and stretch that tank of gas farther with diesel over gasoline.
  2. Safety. Your standard gasoline engine relies on ignition from a spark plug, diesel engines use compressed hot air to ignite the fuel. Diesel fuel has a higher flashpoint than gasoline, so it takes much more than a spark to set it on fire. There is a much lower chance of the fuel igniting in the case of an accident.
  3. Maintenance. Diesel engines are built ruggedly to combat the rigors of higher compression. Also, because they don’t rely on electrical ignition parts like spark plugs and a moving distributor rotor, you don’t have to change out as many engine parts on a regular basis.
  4. Power. You get far more torque from a diesel engine. Because of its slow burn, high compression design, the driveshaft receives much more powerful torque to assist in acceleration and towing capabilities.
  5.  Longevity. Mercedes-Benz currently holds the record for longevity, having multiple vehicles that have racked up more than 900,000 miles on their original engines. Gas-powered cars start needing more love and money poured into them around the 100,000 mile marker. If you are looking to purchase a vehicle for the very long haul, diesel can stick by your side for at least a couple generations.

Of course, there are cons to balance out the pros of diesel engines: While you have less frequent maintenance demands, it can cost you more when you do need major diesel service. The initial purchase price can be about 10% more than the gasoline counterpart. Diesel fuel doesn’t perform well in frigid temperatures, so you may need to install an engine block heater to insure that your car will start on cold winter mornings.

Whether you’re looking at purchasing a diesel vehicle or you already own one, rest assured that Beckley Automotive has the knowledge, the tools and the experience to provide outstanding diesel service. Schedule your appointment online HERE or call our expert service department at 515-243-8185 today!

Pre-Purchase Inspection Takes the Fear Out of Car Buying

bmw pre-purchase european luxury vehicles, pre-purchase inspectionPurchasing a new car is an exciting event, and at Beckley Automotive, we want to keep it that way! When you’re looking to spend a substantial amount of money on a pre-owned vehicle like BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Volvo or any number of domestic beauties, you want to know that you’re getting the value you expect – style, performance, reliability, and economical value! That’s why Beckley’s offers a pre-purchase inspection to set your mind at ease and ensure you’re getting what you pay for.

By scheduling a pre-purchase inspection with Beckley, you can save yourself from inheriting someone else’s problems, not to mention saving potentially hundreds of dollars. Our specialists have years of experience with most makes and models – domestic, Asian and European – so you know you’ll be getting the best service around. We’ll check the brakes, steering, tires, and more, giving you a clear, written explanation of results when it’s all said and done.

Having your future vehicle inspected by someone you trust is also important. At Beckley Automotive, our certified experts give you the facts and verify the listing against the potential issues you may have after the vehicle purchase.

The Beckley Imports pre-purchase inspection includes:

  • An under the hood inspection, where we check the engine for any signs of leaks.
  • A thorough body inspection, where we check out all the body panels to look for any signs of previous accidents or any damage the seller may have not reported.
  • A comprehensive road test to see if the transmission is working properly, as well as the rest of the car.

As soon as you drive the car off the lot, the liability is all on you. Whether buying from an established used car lot or an individual in the paper or online, the seller may not be truly forthcoming with all the details. Even the fear that the seller isn’t telling you everything can make the car-buying process far more stressful than it needs to be.

Make sure you have your vehicle inspected before you purchase to avoid unexpected and expensive repairs down the road. Let Beckley Automotive help you make a good decision in your luxury ride – schedule an appointment online HERE or give us a call at 515.243.8185 today!

Automotive Innovations to Expect in the Near Future

The automotive world changes every year with new models, new technology, and new safety features to please the most dedicated car enthusiast. Innovations for luxury vehicle safety, military vehicles, high-performance hybrids, and “green” manufacturing topped the list for 2015, according to Popular Science Magazine. Here are some highlights of what’s new:

  • In May 2015, the first ever “supercar” was created using 3D-printed parts and cutting factory emissions by up to 90 percent. The Blade, a high-performance automobile that uses carbon-fiber shafts and 3D-printed joints for the chassis, weighs only 1,400 pounds and accelerates from 0-60 in only 2.5 seconds. Created by Divergent Microfactories as a sustainable manufacturing platform, this car is fast, strong and was assembled in around 30 minutes, greatly reducing resources used such as space, energy, materials and time.
  • Oshkosh Defence has created a light combat tactical all-terrain vehicle to withstand bomb blasts and to protect the soldiers inside. It uses similar ballistic protection to a light tank and is expected to replace the Humvee over the next few years with its off-road agility and bomb-resistant shaping.
  • Hybrids are gaining popularity for being eco-friendly, but haven’t taken over the industry due to lack of handling and responsiveness. The Acura NSX for 2017 may change that. While the price is still pretty astronomical, starting around $155,000, the NSX promises to be the first high-performance sports coupe hybrid. It combines an electric motor that offers zero-delay acceleration with a twin-turbo V-6 engine, a motor at each front wheel, and precision power through torque vectoring.
  • Volvo has long been thought of one of the safest cars on the road, and certainly raises the bar with the Volvo XC90. At a much-more affordable starting price of $43,950, the safety features developed for this vehicle may change auto technology for the future. The XC90 offers USB and auxiliary connectors, a built-in hotspot for constant connectivity, and Sensus navigation to get you to your destination with as few distractions as possible. But the safety features are what really set the XC90 apart; using cameras, radar and body sensors, this car will alert a distracted driver to impending crashes or drifting off the road, will engage the brakes if you turn into the path of an oncoming car in an intersection, and crumples the seat frames downward and tightens seatbelts if your car does leave the road.

The future of the automobile industry is already here and could be taking over the roads of Des Moines in the next few years. You can trust Beckley’s expert technicians to stay in front of the technology and to always be ready to take care of your import or domestic vehicle care and repair needs.

Until one of the above beauties is actually in your garage, Beckley’s is ready to help you maintain your current vehicle, whether foreign or domestic, innovative or old school. Click here to schedule an appointment, call us at 515-243-8185, or stop by at 901-8th Street in Des Moines.

Reboot: Quick Tip for Fixing Electrical Problems

, , , , ,

It wasn’t that long ago that cars were designed with a basic electrical system. Wiring, fuses, and relays helped power basic things light lights, dashboard messages, and the radio. And there are still a lot of older cars on the road that don’t have any more bells and whistles than this.

car electrical systems, auto electrical problemsBut the vast majority of cars on the road today have a much more complex electrical system to power things like DVD players, automatic controls for doors and windows, navigation systems, mobile devices, and satellite radio.

And dashboard messaging is no longer limited to letting you know the emergency brake is on or flashing you with the dreaded “Check Engine” light. Now many cars are designed to monitor tire pressure in all four tires, let you know if a door is open, track the temperature inside and out, and much more.

With a greater demand for features powered by electricity in your car, there’s a greater chance for something to go wrong. And it does from time to time. Ever get a dashboard message you don’t recognize, and have to break out the owner’s manual or look it up online? It happens.

Diagnostic Tools Can Help Identify Electrical Problems

Then what? When we service cars with electrical problems, one of the first things we do is connect the car’s computer to our diagnostic tools. In a few minutes, our tools can gather a lot of information about your car and help identify potential problems, both electrical and mechanical.

Sometimes the solution to an electrical problem is pretty straightforward. Replace a fuse or sensor. Change out a relay. Replace wiring damaged by corrosion or worn out over time.

How to Reboot Your Car’s Electrical System

But is it always that way? No. In fact, we sometimes resort to using a technique that’s a lot like hitting Ctrl+alt+delete when your computer starts acting up. Giving your car a reboot can sometimes correct electrical problems. And it’s easy. Disconnect the battery from both terminals, touch them together, wait five minutes, and then reconnect.

In many cases it helps get that electrical problem unstuck, a lot like rebooting your computer or resetting a wireless router to get your Internet signal working again.

Have an electrical problem that you don’t know how to fix? Try giving your car a reboot. Or bring your car in and we’ll take a look. Click here to schedule an appointment, call us at 515-243-8185, or stop by at 901-8th Street in Des Moines.

Has Your Car Been Recalled?

, , , , ,

If you’re the owner of a new car and it’s been recalled for some reason, you’ll get a notice directly from the manufacturer. And even though we live in a high-tech world where the car design and manufacturing process gets heavily scrutinized before production begins, recalls do happen.

30-Plus Recalls in a Month. That’s Normal.

automobile recall, vehicle recall, car recall, recall repair, recall serviceFor example, in December alone there were more than 28 recalls from major manufacturers for things like faulty locks, defective fuel pressure, ignition fuel leaks, wiring problems, defective air bag deployment, drive axel issues, and other problems that could potentially lead to a fire or accident.

Recall Notification for Original Owners

If you find out that your car is on the recall list, you also receive instructions on how to get the problem taken care of (usually at an authorized dealer/repair shop specified by the manufacturer).

Sure, it’s a hassle, but it’s better than the alternative that can occur if you choose to do nothing about a known problem. And if you do find out your car has been recalled, take care of it as soon as possible. Sometimes manufacturers end up putting customers on a waiting list because they run out of parts needed to complete the recall repair.

If You’re Not the Original Owner…

So what happens if you’re not the original owner of a car when a recall is issued? Nothing. You won’t get a visit from the Car Recall Response Team, letter in the mail, or even a phone call from a spammy-looking number.

Want to find out if your car has been recalled? Check with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Visit the site and check Recalls & Defects to see if your car has been recalled for a problem. You can also find recall info on tires, motorcycles, and travel trailers.

Deadline for Recall Repairs

Car recalls happen pretty frequently. But there’s one detail you don’t hear very often from car manufacturers when a recall occurs. You have up to 10 years from the original sale date of the car to get a no-cost repair for a recall.

If your car doesn’t seem to be running right, or you’re concerned it may have been issued a recall, do something about it. Check with the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration, or bring your car in for an inspection. Our team of certified and experienced mechanics stay up to date on the latest recalls, and can let you know if your car is on the list.

No Such Thing as a “Maintenance-Free” Vehicle

, , ,
no care is "maintenance free", needs an oil change

Vehicle Maintenance Is Never Free

But it’s a matter of professionalism as to how much it’s worth…

If you’ve purchased a vehicle recently, you know that car salesmen like to go on and on about how this vehicle is “virtually maintenance-free”. Unfortunately, many of them are only half right (at best).

no care is "maintenance free"Many new cars now have extended service intervals. This is mainly to cut down on how much work is done during the warranty period (i.e., how much money the manufacturer has to cough up or lose out on). However, it’s common knowledge that all vehicles need maintenance at some point. Neglecting maintenance and upkeep on your car may seem okay in the moment, perhaps you’re short on cash or don’t have time, but ignoring it will lead to larger (and more expensive) problems down the road.

3,000 to 6,000 Miles is Key

Maintenance and upkeep is designed to keep your car running smoothly until your next service. It’s like preventative health for your vehicle; if you don’t do it, you’ll pay for it in the long run. Most car manufacturers recommend a major service for your vehicle every 3,000 to 6,000 miles. This includes replacing things that get worn out or consumed, like filters, fluids, belts, and spark plugs, and scanning the vehicle’s computers for any problems that aren’t evident at first glance. Technicians will notate the required repairs that are essential to keep your car running, and will make recommendations for future repairs and service the vehicle may need. This setup puts you in control of your car’s future, and provides you with accurate information to take the next steps in prolonging your vehicle’s life.

Trust Your Vehicle Maintenance to Beckley Imports and Beckley Auto

Not only will we run all of the tests and provide the services listed above, we will also take the time to explain any and all options for your vehicle, and answer all of your questions. We believe that our customers should be empowered to make the right decisions for their vehicle and situation. And, as European car lovers, we understand how important your vehicle is to you. Rest assured we will do everything in our power to keep it running smoothly for a long time.

Prep Your European Auto For Harsh Des Moines Winter Driving

, , , ,
car battery, winter driving bmw des moines iowa

It’s hard to imagine prepping your car for fall and winter driving with the 80+ degree temps we current enjoy.  But reality is that fall is technically here and that means turkey, presents, and bowl games and HARSH WINTER DRIVING are just around the corner.

TIP:  When you see the garden centers closing up and the patio furniture on clearance at the stores – it’s time to winterize.

winter driving bmw des moines iowaWinter puts an amazing strain on your car’s systems and fluids.  And if you leave your car outdoors overnight, it endures even more punishment.  Here’s what you should do now to avoid shivering on the roadside waiting for a tow

Get caught up on recommended maintenance

If the summer was just too busy, it’s a good idea to get caught up on the simple things.  We know that with other places you’ve been in the past, you might have felt “taken” a bit on add-ons and extras that don’t seem necessary.  We guarantee that Aaron and Thomas will recommend what’s necessary for your vehicle and give you clear guidance on additional maintenance items that you should consider.

TIP:  Sometimes you just feel like asking the question, “Is it OK if I wait on servicing say…my water pump…until the next time I visit?”  Don’t feel awkward about it! At Beckley, you’ll get an honest answer that does not contain a hidden agenda or innuendo.  We’ve built our business on honesty and good value…so ask any question you’d like and we’ll give you a straightforward answer.

Kick the tires

Possibly the most essential element in the winter equation is tires.  If you don’t do a summer/winter tire switch, make sure you have tread and lots of it.  Sometimes when you’re in that “in between” stage where there’s “probably just enough tread to get by til Spring,” this is a tough decision.  Safety should be your first consideration here.  Stopping distances go through the roof on snow and ice and tread is your friend.

Get the cooling system ready to be REALLY cool

It might seem like “cooling” systems are less relevant in the winter.  True you’re less likely to have overheating issues after running 10 minutes when it’s 20 degrees outside.  But a properly operating cooling system is essential to your engine’s life at all temperatures.  Freezing temps can really push an old water pump to the limit so if you’re approaching or over the max life for that part – consider a proactive replacement.

Put the scraper and winter emergency kit back in the vehicle

It’s a great idea to keep a plastic bin from Lowe’s or Menards with the following items in them.  By the way, check your items each year for expiration dates and be sure to change out batteries.

  • spare gloves
  • jackets
  • flashlights
  • first aid kit
  • small shovel
  • food
  • knife
  • chains
  • jumper cables

TIP:  Consider putting one or more of those 40 pound sandbags in the rear of your car.  This will help with traction in a rear wheel drive car of course.  But a side benefit is that if you get stuck, you can grab the knife from your winter safety kit, cut open the bag, and lay the sand down under and around your tires for extra traction.  You’d be surprised how much this helps when things get slick and you’re spinning those gorgeous wheels.

The Beckley team is available for convenient appointments from early morning to evening.  We’ll even take you to work and pick you up with our shuttle.  Give us a call and let’s see what we can do to take care of your investment.
