Car Battery Troubleshooting Tips

car battery troubleshooting

Car battery problems can range from extremely simple to head-scratching confusing. In fact, some engine problems have nothing to do with the battery at all, but with the alternator or another part of the vehicle all together. No matter what make or model car you currently drive, it’s important to understand basic universal car battery troubleshooting.

Warning Signs You Need to Replace Your Battery Soon

It’s always better to fix an issue before it turns into a problem such as getting stranded with a dead battery. Thankfully, a dying battery typically puts out a host of different signs. How do you know it’s your battery? First, if you notice it takes your car a few revs before kicking to life, it is a clear sign you need a new battery. If you notice leaking from around the battery, see it is swelling or has a low power level when testing, these are all signs to replace your battery. At the very least, have your battery performance tested every three years which tends to be the typical life of a car battery.

Following are some car battery troubleshooting clues that may not be the battery at all:
  • Nothing Happens When You Turn the Key
If you turn the key in the ignition and nothing happens at all, it means the battery is dead. If there are no lights, signs of the radio, buzzes or anything else, the vehicle is not receiving any power. Charge the battery if you can and bring it into Beckley Auto. Our experienced technicians will be able to tell if it’s the battery, the electrical system, or another component causing the problem.
  • Car Can’t Turn Over
If you have some power – like dim and fading lights or a clicking noise – but the engine just doesn’t catch when turning the key, it probably isn’t a battery problem at all. Car batteries aren’t meant to provide long-term power. The alternator’s job is to keep replenishing the juice to the battery while the car is running. If you can jumpstart the car but it dies again shortly after removing the cables, a faulty alternator is most likely the culprit.
  • Car Battery Smells BAD
If your vehicle smells like rotten eggs, it means the battery is leaking. Using an alkaline like baking soda, carefully clean off the battery engine and see if this does the trick. If it continues to leak, it is time to replace the battery.

Car battery troubleshooting is pretty simple, no matter what make and model. If you suspect you have a bad battery, schedule an appointment online HERE or call our service department at 515.243.8185 today. Our experienced and trained technicians will get your vehicle running as good as new!

Check These Signs Your Car is Out of Alignment

, , , , , ,

out of alignment, wheel alignment serviceWhat you do in your vehicle, how you drive it and how you take care of it all plays a role in the long term performance of the car, truck or SUV. Proper tune ups and maintenance can correct slight issues every vehicle experiences. One such issue you’ll run into eventually includes an alignment. A car alignment doesn’t start off as a major problem. You may just notice a slight difference in how it handles. However, if not corrected early on, it can develop additional problems, costing you more money in repair services. That is why Beckley Auto wants you to know how to tell when your car is out of alignment.

Vehicle Pulling

Have you noticed your vehicle is pulling in one direction or the other? It likely means your vehicle is out of alignment. While this might mean you need to rotate your tires, you realistically should not have a substantial pull to one side because of tires. Not sure if your vehicle is pulling to one side? Look at how your steering wheel is positioned when driving straight. Is it tilted either to the right or left? If so, your may be out of alignment. Also, if you let go of the wheel, does it drift in a particular direction? Again, it probably means you need a car alignment service.

Tires are Not Wearing Evenly

On average, you turn your vehicle to the right slightly more than to the left. This is one reason to rotate your tires in order to ensure even wear. However, if one side of your vehicle is wearing significantly faster than the other side, it means more weight is being diverted to that side of the vehicle. Correcting the alignment will make your vehicle safer and extend tire life.

Squealing Tires

When you turn do you hear the tires squeal? You’re most likely not a speed demon, street racing in your gorgeous European import vehicle. If the tires squeal when performing a natural, standard turn that isn’t under duress, you may need an alignment.

From routine maintenance to larger repair needs, Beckley Auto is here for you and your vehicle. It doesn’t matter if you drive a Mercedes or a Buick, a Porsche or Mini Cooper, our repair technicians have the necessary knowledge and experience to service your vehicle.

If you believe your vehicle is out of alignment, needs an oil change or any kind of work done on your vehicle, schedule your appointment online today! In no time, your vehicle will respond just as it did when you first drove it off the lot.

Paintless Dent Removal Can Right These Wrongs

, , , , , , , , ,

paintless dent removalThere is nothing worse than walking up to your car and seeing a brand new ding in the bumper or quarter panel. It stands out like a sore thumb – even if other people can’t see it, YOU know it’s there! If you recently suffered a dent or are tired of looking at that rough patch in the middle of a smooth surface, Beckley’s is able to meet all of your paintless dent removal needs. While it may be too late to prevent the dents and dings already on your auto body, here are the most common ways that dent got there in the first place.

Free-Range Shopping Carts

Sadly, if people paid more attention to their surroundings, most dents could be avoided. When someone allows their shopping cart to roll into a parked car or they leave their cart in the middle of the parking lot, these dents caused by another person’s carelessness are more than annoying. While a shopping cart dent is usually minor, it’s still frustrating to walk back to after completing a shopping trip. When you can, it’s a good rule of thumb – and great karma – to corral those wayward carts when you see them roaming free.

Door Dings

Similar to the shopping cart problem, the second leading culprit behind vehicle dents stems from other car doors. Whether from overzealous children or adults just not paying attention, these dents can prove far more damaging than a shopping cart due to the increased level of force behind an opening door. Outside of not driving to a parking lot, this is a culprit you can’t completely avoid. While you can’t control how other people park, you can do your part by trying not to crowd either side of your own spot.

On Your Own

Not all dents come from other people. Sometimes backing up into a sign, nudging the curb or bumping something else happens. With so many distractions available in our cars these days, it can be easy to underestimate distances. As long as you stay aware of your surroundings you should be able to avoid most of dent-causing situations.

Mother Nature

Hail and sleet can cause all sorts of damage and sometimes there’s no way of avoiding it. High winds blow around trash cans or rain gutters that can land on your hood and leave their mark. These minor dents don’t always require insurance filing, but you sure don’t want to have to look at them every day.

No matter the make, model or value of your vehicle, a dent often detracts from its overall appearance. While a dent typically has no impact on how your vehicle runs, it’s most likely all you see whenever you approach your car. If you are ready to correct the dents and restore the pristine beauty of your vehicle, our Des Moines paintless dent removal experts are here to service you.

When you trust Beckley’s with your paintless dent removal needs, we can right these wrongs and return your prized vehicle to its original, showroom appearance. Schedule your appointment online HERE or call 515.243.8185 today!

Warning Signs of Failing Brakes

, , , , , ,

failing brakes, brake maintenance, brake pads, new brakesKeeping you safe while out on the road is job number one at Beckley Auto. One of your first lines of defense is the vehicle’s brakes. Over time, the brakes will wear down, extending the time it takes for you to come to a complete stop. This happens gradually so it can be hard to notice. While quality brake pads can last you tens of thousands of miles, it’s important to know the warning signs of failing brakes. If you experience any of the following warning signs, bring your vehicle in for an inspection. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.

  1. Brake Pads Are Looking Thin

From time to time, check out how your brakes look. Since cars don’t use hubcaps any more, it’s easy to see the brake pad by peeking through the spokes of the wheel. You want to keep at least a quarter inch pad. If the pad is slightly under this, you should start planning for new brakes. If there is next to nothing, make your appointment as soon as possible. Failure to do so can put you in danger and potentially cause damage to the vehicle.

  2. Your Car is Trying to Tell You Something

It’s nice to enjoy music while driving or take part in the local talk show host’s banter. However, from time to time turn the radio off and listen to your vehicle. You can learn a lot about the vehicle by paying attention the sounds it makes. many brake pads have a noise-making sensor embedded in them to alert the driver to worn pads. If your vehicle squeaks when braking, either this sensor is exposed or there could be metal grinding on metal. This points toward failing brakes and is a potentially dangerous condition.

  3. Need More Room to Break

Your vehicle is exceptionally responsive when brakes are new, but as your brakes wear down, you’ll need more stopping time and distance. If you notice reduced responsiveness, it could mean your brakes are thin and about gone or you could have a brake fluid leak. Both need correcting.

These warning signs hold true for any make or model of vehicle. So whether you drive a Ram 1500 or an Acura XRS, if you notice any of these warning signs it is important to bring in your vehicle. Our expert technicians will inspect your brakes and tell you honestly what can wait and what needs immediate attention.

At Beckley Auto we can handle any of your brake needs. Whether you need car brakes or are just approaching your routine mileage inspection, book an appointment online HERE to have your vehicle serviced, or call 515.243-8185. We’ll keep you safe while you’re out on the road.

Have Your Vehicle Serviced at a Certified Car Service Center

, ,

certified car service centerOne of the most common mistakes people make when searching for an auto mechanic is simply assuming all vehicles are designed the same. While yes, it is true vehicles have an engine, transmission, radiator and many of the same features, not everything connects the same way while other elements interact differently from one vehicle to the next.  No matter if you drive a Ford F-150 or a Mercedes 540K Special, you need to take your vehicle into a certified car service center with expert knowledge of your particular vehicle. If you’re looking for the perfect gift this Valentine’s Day, skip the flowers and chocolate. Have her vehicles serviced and tuned up by an experienced mechanic at a certified car service center like Beckley Automotive.

A Minor Change Can Be a Major Problem

Most vehicles share similar features but with just minor variations. To drain the radiator on some vehicles you may have a simple spigot controlled by a wrench. Other vehicles require you to remove hosing and wire clamps. It may be a simple difference, but these small variations occur throughout the entire vehicle. The more modern the vehicle, the more important the change. If you have an auto mechanic used to working on Ram trucks try to work on a Mercedes M Class, they may not completely understand what is going on under the hood. Due to this, not every mechanic is right for your vehicle. You need a car service center with mechanics certified to work on your make and brand of vehicle.

Always Ask About Specialty Vehicles

At Beckley Auto, we specialize in nearly all makes and models. We have certified mechanics working on BMW, Audi, Ford and Chevy models, all of whom are specially trained to work on these kinds of cars. We are an Authorized Bosch Service center for European Imports, and an ASE Blue Seal shop, meaning all of our technicians are trained and certified experts. When searching for certified car service, rest assured that Beckley Automotive has you covered.

Our goal is to make sure you enjoy a car you love for as long as possible. Proper maintenance is vital to extending the longevity of any auto, and every auto requires proper care. With our team of certified and experienced mechanics, we can give you the expert care needed and complete your service in a timely manner.

This Valentine’s Day, keep your loved one safe by bringing her vehicle in to our service center. Schedule a service time online at your convenience or call our service center at 515-243-8185.

New Year’s Resolutions to Keep Your Car in Top Shape

, , , , ,

new year's resolutions, new years resolutions, car care des moinesEvery January, Americans fall into the trap of setting – and setting aside – New Year’s Resolutions. How many barely used pairs of running shoes are taking up space in your closet? Could you open your own exercise facility with all the equipment gathering dust somewhere in your basement? We always start with the best of intentions and then old habits and real life get in the way and everything keeps rolling on the same as last year and the year before.

Resolutions You Can Keep: Maintain Your Car’s Top Fitness

Following are just a few things you can do to get your vehicle into its best shape since it rolled off the assembly line – and to keep it in fighting shape for years to come!

  1. Keep the interior clean: When many of us live in our cars, grabbing a quick bite to eat on the go between home and work, on the way to a meeting, between kids’ activities, it doesn’t take long to accumulate a bit of trash. Stop it before it gets out of control! At least quarterly, take your car somewhere that will clean out your interior for you. Vacuum the seats and floors, clean the inside of your windows and wipe down the dash. Then be strict with riders and yourself to grab any trash EVERY time you get out of the car. Your car will love you for it.
  2. Run through a car wash: Accumulated dirt and dust make your car look terrible, and the grime of winter roads treated with salt and sand can do a number on your finish. Don’t wait until someone scrawls “WASH ME” in the dirt on your auto; set a schedule to do a quick car wash drive-through at least every two weeks. Harsh winter weather in Iowa may dictate more frequent visits, but two weeks should be good on a regular basis. And don’t be stingy – splurge for the wax! It will make your finish look shiny and new as well as protect it from regular driving damage.
  3. Schedule quarterly checkups: A little maintenance can go a LONG way. Most vehicles need an oil change and a new filter every 3 months (more often if you’re particularly hard on your car). And just like staying hydrated might be a personal health resolution, these checkups are the perfect opportunity to have your car’s fluid levels topped off, too. If you are checking transmission, steering and brake fluids on a regular basis, a crack or leak is much easier to detect. Your service center can nip it in the bud well before it becomes a costly repair. And don’t forget to replace wiper blades and have your chassis lubrication looked at during every other service visit.
  4. Check tire pressure: Learn what your optimal tire pressure is for your vehicle and specific tires and then maintain it. Every driver should carry a tire gauge in their glove box and should check their tire pressure every other time they fill up the gas tank. Driving on properly inflated tires not only extends the life of the tires, but improves safety and gas mileage. There should be a sticker on the inside edge of your driver’s door that tells you what psi the tires on your car should be at for the best performance.

Keeping New Year’s Resolutions doesn’t have to be difficult. You are in your car nearly every day, so remembering to follow the above steps should be second nature in no time! When you take care of your car, it will give you years of life and a sense of reliability and security to make 2017 a great year on the road!

Let Beckley Automotive help keep your New Year’s Resolutions on track! Schedule an appointment online HERE, visit our convenient downtown Des Moines location at 901 8th Street, or call our outstanding service department at 515.243.8185.

Improve Driving Safety with a Winter Wheel Alignment

winter tires, winter driving bmw, des moines winter, beckley wheel alignment, winter alignmentYou’ve probably enjoyed the summer and great fall temperatures with a handful of outings that required driving your car on dirt/gravel roads. You traveled some Midwest backroads, hit a few pot holes, and now you notice that your car pulls to one side when you’re driving down the road, indicating that your wheel alignment could use a little TLC.

If your car seems to handle differently, veers to one side, or steering seems to vibrate, it may be time for a winter wheel alignment. Car experts recommend getting a wheel alignment for your car at least every 10,000 miles. Proper wheel alignment helps keep your car on the road, improves gas mileage, tire longevity, and makes steering easier.

Whether the wheel alignment of your car has been compromised from driving on rough roads, hitting a curb, or getting into a minor fender bender, it’s a bigger deal than you may think. When your wheels aren’t properly aligned, you lose traction and the contact between tires and road that is so critical during the rough Iowa winters. We all know that the tread on your tires is imperative to safe winter driving, and misaligned wheels drastically lower the lifespan of your tires and can put you and your passengers in danger.

Poor road conditions probably have the biggest impact on wheel alignment than anything else. Over time, driving on bumpy road with pot holes and uneven surfaces can alter your alignment and wear down your tires. But even if you’re mainly driving on paved roads, bumps, pot holes, curbs, and debris you might drive over can have the same effect. With winter on the way, now is a good time for a winter wheel alignment, especially if you are switching from all-season tires to winter snow tires. Since winter tires are designed specifically to move snow and slush off the road and out from under your tires, proper alignment is critical for that to happen.

In the old days, mechanics took a best-guess approach to fine-tuning the wheel alignment of a car. But even a few millimeters can make a difference in steering performance and tire longevity. We use a computerized wheel alignment machine that produces precise measurements for the camber, toe, and caster. These measurements help us make adjustments to the backward and forward tilt of your tires, the inward and outward tilt of your tires, and the distance between the front and rear tires. The computerized wheel alignment machine also helps us make sure your steer wheel is centered.

A typical wheel alignment for most cars is fairly inexpensive, but it can save you a lot of time, trouble and cash in the long run. If you think your car is in need of a winter wheel alignment, stop in for an inspection, and we’ll point you and your car in the right direction. Schedule your appointment online HERE or call us at 515-243-8185.

Paintless Dent Removal is Painless to Your Budget

, , , ,

paintless dent removal, dent repair des moines, auto detailing and paintless dent removalFall in the Midwest can be temperate, hot and sweltering, cold and windy, or severely stormy – and usually in the same week. With volatile weather like Iowa can see during the spring and autumn, thunderstorms with damaging hail are not out of the question. But storms aren’t the only threat to your car’s body in the fall; the rising and setting sun seems to glare brighter during those crucial rush hour drive times. Being blinded by the sun happens far more often than we’d like to think about, and cars and shopping carts and even parking barriers seem to pop up out of nowhere.

Door dings and fender benders can happen at any time of year, but once that damage is done, your best bet is to get it fixed right away before deeper damage occurs. With winter bearing down on Des Moines drivers, now is the perfect time to take steps that will protect your investment and maintain your vehicle’s value. Paintless dent removal done by the experts at Beckley Automotive can save you time, money and worry.

Paintless Dent Removal is a method of dent repair that doesn’t alter your auto’s paint job. Not all dents qualify for this non-invasive treatment, but minor dings and dents can be removed from your car’s body with little drama.

Some other benefits of Paintless Dent Removal:

  • Saves you money. For smaller dents that are less than an inch, prices are usually exceptionally reasonable. Dents that are easy to reach, like hail damage on a car’s hood, are even easier on the checkbook.
  • Saves you time. No one likes to be without their car for long at all, and paintless dent removal can usually be done within a day. Even if there are multiple dents that are deeper or wider and require a little more time, this method will still take far less time than traditional repair.
  • Saves your insurance premium. Dent repair and removal can cost a pretty penny if done traditionally. You don’t want to pay your own cash for it, so you claim it on your auto insurance, which can cause premiums to go up. But with Paintless Dent Removal, the cost is often less than your insurance premium, which means you don’t have to claim it, which means you won’t be paying more for your insurance to fix a couple dings. Plus, these slight damages won’t show up on vehicle history reports, which will help you when it comes time to sell.
  • Saves the environment. Because there is almost no need to use paints or solvents, Paintless Dent Removal doesn’t release harmful toxins into the air. Some other auto repair methods rely on products that contain environmentally dangerous chemicals.
  • Saves your original paint and your car’s value. If you plan on selling your car – ever – the value of your vehicle can drop if you don’t have the original paint. If you can maintain your vehicle’s original exterior paint and finish, your resale value will get a tremendous boost. Paintless Dent Removal helps you get the most from your investment.

Beckley has a dedicated Detailing and Paintless Dent Removal department to meet your minor repair needs. Our experts have the knowledge, the training and the experience to remove those small dings and dents and even to refinish scratched wheels. Don’t trust your car’s exterior to anyone else!

Bring your car to our dent removal artists and learn for yourself why Beckley Automotive is the best in Des Moines! Schedule an appointment online HERE, call our service department at 515-243-8185, or stop by our convenient Downtown Des Moines location at 901 8th Street.
