Don’t Get Left Out In The Cold

Winter is upon us!  Have you heard enough of that warning lately?  While you’re stocking up on ice salt and making sure the old snow blower still starts up, we at Beckley Imports want to make sure you check out one other thing: your car battery and starter system.

winter driving bmw des moines iowaWith all the new features offered in cars today, like seat heaters and high end sound systems, battery drain happens more quickly than in the past.  Add on a couple of bitter Iowa winters, and your battery is tired.  The last thing you want on a cold January night after a long day of work is to walk out to your car only to find that it won’t start.

At Beckley Imports, we stock AC Delco and Interstate batteries that have the long life and power you need to start your engine every time.  Not only that, but these two battery brands are guaranteed to fit properly.  This is highly important, as many batteries are now set in the trunk or under the backseat; poorly fitted batteries can  lead to more costly problems like leaks and short circuits.  Beckley Imports is also an Authorized Bosch Service Center, meaning that we use only genuine Bosch starters and alternators on European vehicles; these parts come with a two year warranty, so if something goes wrong, you don’t have to worry.

If you’re concerned about your car’s battery making it through the winter months, bring it on by.  We’d be happy to test it out for you.  Beckley Imports has top of the line equipment to test the battery and other factors within the vehicle that could cause it to fail.

Don’t get left out in the cold this winter.  Call Beckley Imports at (515) 243-8185 and schedule your appointment today.

5 “Did You Know” Answers for The Passionate BMW Owner

, , ,
bmw owners, BMW information des moines iowa

While Des Moines BMW owners have unmatched passion for their European autos, being the “Go-To” service location for European cars requires us to dig deep into the history and heritage of the cars we service so we can give the best maintenance and support to your European car as possible. Along the way, we pick up odd and somewhat amusing tidbits of European car information.

Check out these 5 “Did you knows” about our beloved BMW:

  1. passionate bmw ownerThe BMW Name – BMW stands for Bayerische Motoren Werke. In English, that would be: Bavarian Motor Works
  2. The BMW Logo – The Roundel logo stems from the days of its aircraft heritage, and symbolizes a spinning propeller.
A huge component of the BMW logo is the blue and white fields, and those come off the Bavarian flag. (Bavaria is a state in Germany. Yes. BMW’s come from Bavaria.)
  3. The BMW “LOOK” – The kidney Grille was first used in the BMW 303. The 303 was a mid-sized saloon produced in the early 1930’s. It was the first BMW to use the “kidney grille” which today is a hallmark if their model.
  4. The BMW Letter – BMW does not use automobile platforms like any other manufactures, instead, each generation has a development code (Entwicklungsnummeren ), E = Entwicklung = DevelopmentSo, why did they switch to “F code” with the new 7-series? Did they run out of E-numbers? We’ll have to look into this… 🙂
  5. The FIRST BMW – The first car made by BMW is: The BMW Dixi!!!
BMW bought the Automobilwerk Eisenach in 1928 and, with it, the rights to build the Dixi car… Soon after that, they dropped the Dixi name.

European cars run in our blood (almost literally). From BMWs to Mercedes, Jaguars, Porsche and more, we love what we do as much as you, as owners, love the driving and performance.

Reach out to us if you have any questions concerning your vehicles service and performance. Beckley Imports and the entire Beckley Automotive Group can handle any question and help get you back on the road.

Prep Your European Auto For Harsh Des Moines Winter Driving

It’s hard to imagine prepping your car for fall and winter driving with the 80+ degree temps we current enjoy.  But reality is that fall is technically here and that means turkey, presents, and bowl games and HARSH WINTER DRIVING are just around the corner.

TIP:  When you see the garden centers closing up and the patio furniture on clearance at the stores – it’s time to winterize.

winter driving bmw des moines iowaWinter puts an amazing strain on your car’s systems and fluids.  And if you leave your car outdoors overnight, it endures even more punishment.  Here’s what you should do now to avoid shivering on the roadside waiting for a tow

Get caught up on recommended maintenance

If the summer was just too busy, it’s a good idea to get caught up on the simple things.  We know that with other places you’ve been in the past, you might have felt “taken” a bit on add-ons and extras that don’t seem necessary.  We guarantee that Aaron and Thomas will recommend what’s necessary for your vehicle and give you clear guidance on additional maintenance items that you should consider.

TIP:  Sometimes you just feel like asking the question, “Is it OK if I wait on servicing say…my water pump…until the next time I visit?”  Don’t feel awkward about it! At Beckley, you’ll get an honest answer that does not contain a hidden agenda or innuendo.  We’ve built our business on honesty and good value…so ask any question you’d like and we’ll give you a straightforward answer.

Kick the tires

Possibly the most essential element in the winter equation is tires.  If you don’t do a summer/winter tire switch, make sure you have tread and lots of it.  Sometimes when you’re in that “in between” stage where there’s “probably just enough tread to get by til Spring,” this is a tough decision.  Safety should be your first consideration here.  Stopping distances go through the roof on snow and ice and tread is your friend.

Get the cooling system ready to be REALLY cool

It might seem like “cooling” systems are less relevant in the winter.  True you’re less likely to have overheating issues after running 10 minutes when it’s 20 degrees outside.  But a properly operating cooling system is essential to your engine’s life at all temperatures.  Freezing temps can really push an old water pump to the limit so if you’re approaching or over the max life for that part – consider a proactive replacement.

Put the scraper and winter emergency kit back in the vehicle

It’s a great idea to keep a plastic bin from Lowe’s or Menards with the following items in them.  By the way, check your items each year for expiration dates and be sure to change out batteries.

  • spare gloves
  • jackets
  • flashlights
  • first aid kit
  • small shovel
  • food
  • knife
  • chains
  • jumper cables

TIP:  Consider putting one or more of those 40 pound sandbags in the rear of your car.  This will help with traction in a rear wheel drive car of course.  But a side benefit is that if you get stuck, you can grab the knife from your winter safety kit, cut open the bag, and lay the sand down under and around your tires for extra traction.  You’d be surprised how much this helps when things get slick and you’re spinning those gorgeous wheels.

The Beckley team is available for convenient appointments from early morning to evening.  We’ll even take you to work and pick you up with our shuttle.  Give us a call and let’s see what we can do to take care of your investment.

Who Will Be the First to Own the 2014 BMW i8 Coupe in Des Moines?

,
Des moines BMW i8 Coupe

Des moines BMW i8 CoupeWow is about the best word to describe this beautiful machine. BMW recently announced the specs, pricing, and release date for the 2014 i8. The car was previewed at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show and get this – it’s a plugin hybrid.

The i8 will be available in the Spring of 2014 and MSRP’s at $135,925 including destination and handling. I don’t think anyone in the metro or beyond will be disappointed with a delicious 94 mpg and the ability to run 22 miles on electric-only power. There’s no place more suited to “electric only” than Des Moines considering our amazingly low average commute.

The BMW i8 sports all wheel drive and will do an impressive 0-62 mph in 4.4 seconds. Horsepower clocks in at 362 and top speed is rated at 155 mph (which currently – only Iowa State Troopers carrying governors can approach.)

Charging will take 3.5 hours if connected to a standard outlet but if you opt for the BMW i Charging Station, the charge will only take 1.5 hours. That sounds like a deal in the long run to maximize your ability to run on electric only and save that gas money for more important things.

We’ll update our Facebook page with more on this once we get an alert that a piece has been delivered in the metro. (LIKE our page so we’ll show up in your stream of information.) Until then, dream of sleek lines and NO lines at the pump!

July 29th, BMW will unveil the 2014 i3. This will be the first electric car build from the ground up from BMW. There have been some improvements with the body and overall performance of the i3. LifeDrive is a new concept for BMW that focuses on the body, built from  ultra-stiff carbon fiber, making the car lightweight. It weighs in at 2,630 lbs. from the European configuration. The battery pack weights a light 45o lbs. The battery itself provides drivers 80-100 miles before a charge is needed. BMW decided on a Level 2 battery charger, allowing the battery to charge to 80 percent capacity, within 20 minutes.

If you’re worried about acceleration, the BMW i3 will go from 0 to 60 in seven seconds. The car has a limited electronic speed of 93 mph. BMW borrowed from their motorcycle division, placing a 650 cc two-cylinder engine in the rear of the car. The BMW i3 will also come equipped with ConnectedDrive which offers navigation, monitoring of battery life and can assist in best practices for efficiency. If you’ve been looking for an electric car, the BMW i3 might be a great option for you. Here are the price options for the i3.

Before you purchase a new BMW, let us tell you about the BMW 4 Series Coupe. Details were shared last week about what you can expect from the 4 Series Coupe. We can tell you that there are two different models, the 428i and the 435i. Each model will offer three unique trim levels: Luxury, Sport and M Sport. If you want a new BMW with gadgets, you may want to invest in looking at the Luxury model. If speed is more your thing, the M Sport offers just what you need.

There have been minor modifications with the wheelbase, it being a little longer. If you are familiar with the 6 Series, there are similarities. However, the price of the BMW 4 Series Coupe will be a lower price, the 428i starts at $41,425 and 435i at $46,925. Both models will offer xDrive all-wheel drive. The 428i offers 24o-horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder gas engine. As we said earlier, if speed is your thing, the 435i offers a 300-horsepower turbocharged inline 6. Here are some pictures.

You can watch for the 2014 BMW 4 Series Coupe to be out late summer. Stop in and show us what model and color you decided on.

Keeping Up With Import Innovation

The last few years in the European Auto world has show huge improvements in fuel-efficiency and environmental friendliness.  Beckley Imports prides itself on keeping up with import innovation so you can benefit from everything new and exciting coming out of Europe.

Some exciting things are happening with European Import innovations, according to Popular Science Magazine’s 25th Annual Best of What’s New issue:

  • With stricter emissions laws start going into effect, BMW has led the way with downsizing engines while still keeping the power and performance they are known for.  Their new 328i boasts a four-cylinder engine that still produces 240 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque.  This smaller engine doesn’t skimp on fuel efficiency, either, offering a stunning 34 mpg on the highway.
  • Mercedes-Benz has developed a new, more efficient version of the windshield wiper.  Magic Vision Control, available on the 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL Roadster, prevents ice-and-snow buildup in cold weather with electric heating elements, reduces the flow of wiper fluid, and sprays only during downward wiper strokes to keep you dry when the top is down.
  • In 2012, Porsche introduced their Cayenne Diesel to the U.S.  While it is comparable to hybrids when it comes to in-town fuel efficiency, it blows the competition away when it comes to longer highway trips.  The 3.0-liter turbo diesel engine holds an impressive 240 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque.  According to the Popular Science test-drive, the Porsche Cayenne Diesel showed off with 33 mpg on the highway and an impressive 800 miles on a single tank of fuel.

Beckley Imports works hard to stay up-to-date on current and emerging technologies so that YOU can enjoy the benefits of European import innovation here in central Iowa.  We hold our technicians to rigorous standards, ensuring ongoing education so Beckley Imports can provide you with the BEST European auto care year after year.
